Cassia Tree [Senna bicapsularis]

Fall Flowering

The flowers of Cassia are brilliant waxy yellow with orange stamens that contrast pleasantly with the leaves. The pea-like yellow flowers of the Cassia tree hang in clusters about a foot long and in clusters about a foot long and at the blooming climax can completely cover the oval shaped leaf canopy. Whereas, the Cassia shrub rarely forms a tree in zone 8, it does form a medium sized tree in zone 9, 10 and 11, and at the maximum flowering threshold the golden canopy glows as if incandescently lighted.

The Cassia Tree is Now Called The Senna Tree

Cassia fistula (Senna fistula)

From Asia came the Cassia tree that is also called the "Golden Shower" Tree, "Flowering Senna", "Texas Flowering Senna" and many other names. The Cassia (Senna) tree is a heavy flowering tree or shrub that is cold hardy to zone 8, however, during some years; if the the temperatures drop below 10 degrees F., the tree will freeze to the ground, but will regrow from the roots into a shrub. In the freeze of 1983 at Tifton, GA., the temperatures dropped to zero degrees F., and the Cassia tree did not regrow again.

In zone 9, 10, and 11, the Cassia tree is evergreen and may bloom in the Spring and then reblooms again into the late Summer through the early Fall. At St. Simons Island, GA., and Sea Island, GA., the Cassia tree blooms in late September and continues into October and November; first in heavy blooms yellow covered and then diminishing toward frost.

The Cassia tree (Senna fistula) can grow to 25 feet tall and is closely related to the Jerusalem tree and the Redbud tree; which means that the underlying roots enrich the soil with Nitrogen that is fixed as Nitrogen fertilizer in the root nodules by Nitrogen fixing bacteria: Nitrogen, that is captured from the atmosphere. The Cassia trees are very tolerant of poor soils and also are very tolerant of salt water spray and are commonly found thriving on sand dunes.
